Weight of gun was reduced by 1.5 kg. Upgraded machine gun was named "KM". The basis of Ukrainian machine gun is a machine gun Kalashnikov modernized, which was adopted by the Soviet army in 1969, replacing the model of the PK. KM-7.62 machine gun is designed to defeat enemy personnel and technical resources, as well as to engage aerial targets.

In the upgraded model of Kalashnikov machine gun KM 7.62 managed to improve a number of characteristics, compared to a conventional machine gun Kalashnikov:
- disappeared ribbed barrel of machine gun,
- redesigned flame arrester,
- more effective is grip of reload and the butt,
- enhanced trigger mechanism,
- increased rigidity of the cover of the receiver due to the longitudinal ribs.

This machine gun was presented the 21 of September, 2011 in Kiev at the exhibition "Arms and Security 2011" under the auspices of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

The principle of operation of the modernized Kalashnikov machine gun is automatic, which is based on removal of powder gases. Shooting is done in continuous fire. Machine gun KM-7.62 has external sights in the form of front sight and adjustable rear sight. Also there is the possibility of mounting an optical or night sight.

Shooting can use different types of ammunition: conventional bullets, tracer bullets, armor-piercing incendiary bullets and bullets of increased breakdown. Ground fire angle is 90°, and firing on air targets is carried out at an angle of 360°.

KM-7.62 can fire using bipedal folding bipod, as well as the tripod Stepanova. Automatic machine gun operates on a system of removal of powder gases from the barrel with a long gas stroke. Gas removal mechanism is located under the barrel. The barrel is locked using the rotary shutter. Shooting is conducted with an open shutter only burst mode.

Feeding is made by a machine-gun belt with a capacity of 100, 200 and 250 rounds of ammunition. Feeding system is two-stage. Shooting from a tripod, cartridge box is mounted on the right side and the cartridges are fed from right to left. Box can be attached to the leg of the tripod that allows you to maneuver with a machine gun on the battlefield by one person without reloading weapons. When firing from the bipod, cartridge box attached under the receiver of machine gun and cartridges are fed from left to right.

Upgraded three-legged machine tool 6T5, which is used for machine gun KM-7,62, was developed by L. Stepanov. The basis of this structure is the principle of multi-functionality of all parts. Machine tool of L. Stepanov weighs 3.2 kg less than Samozhenkov machine tool. Also, an improved machine has 20 parts less than its predecessor.
